Matt's Triathlon for Raw Hope

Donate To This Campaign

A message from Matt Scott:

I'm so excited to be registered in my first half-Ironman triathlon race in July 2024 in Muskoka, Ontario!
This won’t be my first triathlon, but it will be the longest and toughest race I’ve ever attempted. Muskoka has hills!

This bike and I have travelled 9,676km together over the last 10 years, completing 3 Olympic-distance triathlons in the process. This picture is from a long training ride in September. Some friends from my local triathlon club cycled from Burlington to Niagara Falls (about 90km). This is the bike I intend to ride the Muskoka Half-Ironman with.

But this race means much more to me than just a personal challenge. I'm swimming, biking, and running this race to make a lasting difference for children living in conflict-affected countries. It’s in our news headlines: the combined effects of worsening conflict, displacement, and climate change are making life much harder for tens of millions of children around the world. World Vision has deepened its global commitment to children affected by these hazards, changing our way of working to be more agile and ensure more lasting impact.

As I prepare for Ironman Muskoka, I'd like to ask for your support in three ways:

  1. Donate: Your contribution, no matter the amount, can go a long way in providing hope and opportunities for these children. I would love for 100 people to join me in becoming regular Raw Hope supporters. You can be one of those by following the link on this page.
  2. Spread the Word: Even if you can't make a financial contribution, would you consider sharing this message with your friends, family, and colleagues can help raise awareness about World Vision's work in fragile contexts? I’ve got time to train and I’ve got time to tell stories too. I will come to your home or workplace or place of worship and talk about why supporting children in fragile contexts matters right now.
  3. Pray, if that’s your thing. Hey, it never hurts to pray for peace, and what’s the worst that could happen? I pray for peace a lot, and many of you do too. But if that’s not your thing, take a moment to pause and reflect on the world’s pretty dire headlines and imagine that peace and justice are possible for the world’s most vulnerable people.
I firmly believe that with your support, we can make a tangible, significant impact on the lives of children in some of the world's most challenging circumstances. I’ve had the opportunity to visit the communities World Vision engages with in some of the most dangerous parts of the world. Despite massive challenges, the children and community leaders I meet there are creative, smart, determined, and surprisingly hopeful. They ask us to stand with them.

Just like a triathlon has three different disciplines, committing to children in conflict-affected countries requires helping children and their families: a) survive crises, b) recover their resilience, and c) build hopeful futures

Thank you for considering my request. Your support means the world to me, and it will mean even more to the children we stand with.

Thanks for your encouragement and support.

This is me five years ago in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, wearing my Team World Vision T-shirt, in front of a school in Busanza, North Kivu. World Vision helped the community here construct their own school with a new toilet block, and provided teacher training and some school materials, among other things. North Kivu is an incredibly beautiful and fragile part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I can talk for hours about the challenges that children manage to overcome in this community.
