Each participant's registration of $50 goes to World Vision's Water Initiatives. In 2018, the funds raised from the Global 6K will be helping water projects in the country of Mali, Africa. In the targeted project regions of Gao and Timbuktu, only 65% of the population currently has access to potable water. In Gao, World Vision plans to construct a mechanized water network system providing clean water to 5,133 individuals. In Timbuktu, we will rehabilitate 5 boreholes providing clean water to an additional 2,000 people.
World Vision will ensure that households are provided with water-carrying and storage containers to ensure water is not contaminated between its collection and consumption. We will train locals to operate and maintain these water sources to ensure their long-term sustainability. Lastly, we will train community members on good sanitation and hygiene practices, such as handwashing.
After you register, you will receive a World Vision Global 6K for Water t-shirt and bib in the mail. Map out a 6km route in your neighbourhood or attend a bigger gathering at a host site. If you are doing the virtual Global 6K, you will also receive a medal in the mail. For those taking part at an official host site, you will receive your medal as you cross the finish line! Walk or run with your friends and family on Saturday, May 26th, 2018, and post your photos on social media with the hashtag #6KforWater!
From fast runners to leisurely walkers, thousands of people will unite around the globe on a mission together to bring clean water to communities in need. World Vision works in over 100 countries and brings clean water to 1 new person every 10 seconds.
But we believe the global water and sanitation crisis can be solved within our lifetimes. That’s why we’re focused on providing clean water and sanitation to every man, woman, and child in every community we work in, including the most vulnerable populations in the hardest-to-reach places.
